Police Operation Nets 4 Drunk Drivers, 3 With Cannabis
A police operation on the L171 at Osterheide has resulted in four drivers being caught under the influence, three of whom tested positive for cannabis. The operation, led by Commissioner Simon Janz, aimed to provide practical experience in body test procedures and interrogation techniques. It also served as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence.
By 12 noon, the operation had caught three drivers under the influence of cannabis and one drunk driver with an alcohol level of 1.26 percent. Despite the legalization of cannabis on April 1, there is no evidence of an increased occurrence of driving under the influence in road traffic. The operation involved 20 police officers from the Straßenverkehrsbehörde in the Heidekreis district, who checked the fitness to drive of road users. Initial body tests included pupil checks, trembling hands, balance tests, and time perception tests.
The statistics show that over 90 percent of drivers under the influence of alcohol and/or sedatives are men, with nearly half between 25 and 44 years old. The police aim to raise awareness among citizens about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or sedatives. Voluntary alcohol or urine tests were requested if peculiarities or obvious symptoms were observed, with a mandatory blood test if a test was refused or results were positive.
The operation on the L171 at Osterheide has highlighted the importance of road safety and the dangers of driving under the influence. The police hope that those caught will learn from their mistakes and protect the rest of the traffic. Despite the legalization of cannabis, there is no evidence of an increased occurrence of driving under the influence in road traffic.
