Psychiatric institutions urged to admit knife-bearing woman under their care
A 39-year-old German woman, reportedly acting alone without any political motive, was detained by police after stabbing 18 people at Hamburg's bustling main train station on May 23, 2025. The incident occurred during rush hour, as well as the start of school holidays in Hamburg.
According to investigators, the suspect, who is now in police custody, showed signs of a mental illness at the time of the attack. The attack took place on the south platform, with the woman initially handling the knife before moving to platform 13/14 where she started stabbing bystanders waiting for the train.
Rescue services, firefighters, and approximately 350 police officers responded to the incident, assisted by around 60 federal police officers, 50 firefighters, and 20 crisis intervention team members from the German Red Cross.
This train station, known as one of Germany's busiest transport hubs with over 500,000 passengers daily, was the unfortunate site of this violent incident. The attack is currently being thoroughly investigated, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
