The girl, who had been under surveillance by authorities as an Islamist threat for months, was already under close observation and placed in the psychiatric ward following concrete indications and police interventions about her threat potential. The Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association, which runs the facility, initially declined to comment on the matter.
Following the attack, the 24-year-old caregiver sustained life-threatening injuries but is now out of danger after emergency surgery. The attacker has since been placed in a closed psychiatric ward under police custody.
