Regarding the Current Process: What Measures are Implemented for Dust and Particle Management during Procedures?
In August 2025, Vistra, the energy company, received approval for its comprehensive plans to demolish and redevelop Moss Landing 300 (ML300), a power plant that was damaged in a fire earlier this year. The plans, which are still in effect, are designed with a strong emphasis on safety and environmental protection.
The demolition process will involve the complete dismantling of the building, down to its foundation. Vistra is committed to ensuring that all work moves at the speed of safety, with a particular focus on controlling fine particles and dust. To achieve this, the company has been required to submit several work plans specific to fine particle and dust control.
The plans also include corrective steps to be taken in case of elevated readings, even if they do not exceed the standards. This proactive approach is intended to prevent contaminants from reaching levels that could pose a threat to the environment or the community.
The demolition work, once the batteries have been removed, will fall under the oversight of county and/or state authorities. However, during the battery removal phase, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will continue to oversee operations at ML300.
Air monitoring and air sampling have been active at the site, at the plant perimeter, and in the community since the January fire. This continuous monitoring will continue throughout the demolition process to ensure the safety of the environment and the community.
The plans detail community air monitoring and sampling, work zone air monitoring and sampling, demolition dust control measures, and ensuring air monitoring and air sampling quality assurance. These measures are intended to minimize the impact of the demolition on the local environment and community.
As the demolition of ML300 gets underway, Vistra remains committed to its mission of generating electricity in a safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible manner. The company's focus on safety, environmental protection, and community wellbeing is evident in its meticulous plans for the demolition of ML300.
