In a heartwarming display of kindness and unity, over 150 volunteers from the national construction charity Band of Builders recently completed an ambitious project to renovate the family home of Toby Fletcher, a 16-year-old boy with quadriplegic cerebral palsy and dystonia.
Toby, who is also deaf, requires round-the-clock palliative care due to his conditions. His mother, Sarah Fletcher, has been struggling to provide proper care for him, as their home in Swaffham, Norfolk, lacked a fully finished, accessible ground-floor bedroom. This meant that Toby had to be carried upstairs to bed every night, causing physical and emotional stress for Sarah.
The completed renovations, sponsored by DEWALT, have transformed the family's home, creating a poignant legacy for Shaun Fletcher, Toby's father who passed away last December. The project, which took 12 days to complete, included the construction of Toby's ground-floor bedroom and the landscaping of both the front and back of the house.
The project was a collaborative effort, with over 40 tradespeople, including groundworkers, electricians, bathroom fitters, plumbers, decorators, landscapers, solar panel engineers, and smart home specialists, working tirelessly on site. Gavin Crane, chief executive of Band of Builders, described the project as their most ambitious to date.
The completed home now provides a safe and supportive environment for Toby and his family, allowing for proper overnight care support. Sarah Fletcher expressed immense gratitude, saying the volunteers were "superheroes" and that completing the project made her feel that Shaun’s legacy now lives on in a home surrounded by compassion and support.
The project received widespread attention, with the initiative being publicly featured on media such as The One Show. This helped raise awareness of the charity’s work and the situation of the Fletcher family. The unified effort by the construction industry to help a family in need after tragic circumstances reflects the power of community support and kindness.
