Renowned Star Wars composer John Williams admits to having little fondness for film music in general.
In a surprising revelation, the legendary film score composer John Williams has shared his thoughts on film music, stating that he never really liked it very much. Known for his groundbreaking work on iconic films such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Schindler's List, Jaws, and the first three Harry Potter films, among others, Williams has been nominated for a staggering 54 Oscars for his film scores, winning five.
Despite his impressive accolades, Williams considers film music to be functional rather than artistic. He believes that the idea of film music holding the same place in the concert hall as the best music in the canon is a mistaken notion. Williams thinks that the music in films is not as valuable as music in the concert hall.
However, Williams does acknowledge an exception to his general view, stating that there are eight-minute stretches here and there where film music can be good. He has also composed concertos for various instruments, including the violin, flute, tuba, clarinet, cello, trumpet, horn, viola, and oboe, showcasing his versatility and appreciation for concert music.
John Williams' thoughts on film music will be further explored in his upcoming biography, John Williams: A Composer's Life, which is set to be published in September. Tim Greiving, the interviewer for the biography, found Williams' comments shocking but not false modesty.
Williams has worked closely with director Steven Spielberg on 29 films and released a greatest hits album with him in 2017. He premiered his first piano concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra earlier this year.
