Federal Government Appoints Virologist Hendrik Streeck as Drug Czar

Germany's Ministry of Health has announced the appointment of virologist Hendrik Streeck as the new commissioner for addiction and drug issues, colloquially known as the drug czar. The 47-year-old CDU member of parliament, renowned for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic, took over the position from the SPD politician Burkhard Blienert.

In a statement, Health Minister Nina Warken expressed her delight at the appointment, citing Streeck's vast medical knowledge and ability to depolarize the emotionally charged drug debate. Streeck, a popular scientist, emphasized his intention to help, inform, and act, particularly in protecting children and young people from addiction, digital risks, and new harmful substances.

Before his tenure in the Bundestag, Streeck served as the director of the Institute of Virology at the University Hospital Bonn since 2019. As the federal drug czar, he also assumes the role of a key figure in the ongoing debate concerning the handling of cannabis legalization.

The current government, led by the SPD, Greens, and FDP coalition, has implemented a partial legalization of cannabis, allowing adults aged 18 and over to carry and possess certain amounts of cannabis, as well as grow a limited number of plants for personal use. Modest changes are anticipated, such as adjusting possession limits or telemedicine prescriptions.

The cabinet's other appointments include CSU member of parliament Katrin Staffler as the new long-term care ombudsman, while SPD member of parliament Stefan Schwartze retains his position as the patient ombudsman of the government.

Warken highlighted the importance of direct exchange with those affected by health policy, noting that Streeck's medical background would contribute significantly to this endeavor.
