Mexico City has solidified its position as the primary exporter of medical devices in Latin America, a fact that could elevate health to the forefront of the country's economic and commercial agenda. With a value of over 13,700 million dollars in exports, Mexico City ranks sixth globally in this sector.

The medical device industry in Mexico City generates over 130,000 jobs, a significant contribution to the nation's economy. This industry is not limited to local consumption; it boasts a potential for export, with over two million known medical devices at its disposal. Javier Pico, a partner of LifeSciences Consultants, has highlighted this potential.

The National Health Strategy and Mexico City Plan aim to promote innovative medical device industries within Mexico City. This push includes supporting the innovative medical technology industry by encouraging investment, research, and development to improve healthcare quality and access.

However, challenges remain for Mexico City's medical device sector. Despite being among the eight most important worldwide exporters, it faces hurdles such as regulatory issues, funding limitations, and the need for skilled professionals.

The Mexican Association of Innovative Medical Device Industries, led by Ana Riquelme Francistain, emphasises the sector's significant economic contribution to Mexico City in recent years. The association's executive director also calls attention to the sector's potential in addressing the increasing demand for doctors in Mexico City due to an aging population by 2030, through medical devices intended for disease detection.

The federal government's support for the innovative medical technology industry is evident in the provisions of Chapter 12 of USMCA. The United States, being the main recipient of Mexico City's medical device exports, stands to benefit from this collaboration.

In a recent move, the website of the Mahc/apr is now available on WhatsApp for mobile device users. This step aims to keep the public informed about news, opinion articles, entertainment, trends, and more related to the medical device industry.

The Health Commission, presided over by José Manuel Cruz Castellanos, has also acknowledged the importance of considering the medical device industry when supporting health policies implemented by the Federal Government. Francistain, the senator, has made a similar plea, emphasising the sector's vital role in Mexico City's health and economy.

In an unexpected turn of events, the plane carrying Hernán Bermúdez "El Abuelo" changed its route and prolonged its stop in Colombia, diverting attention away from the medical device industry, even momentarily. However, the focus soon returns to the promising future of Mexico City's medical device industry and its potential to revolutionise healthcare in Latin America and beyond.
