A Vietnamese military medical unit under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has successfully performed emergency surgery to save a nearly severed finger of a Pakistani patient. The operation was carried out by doctors at Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 (FHL 2.6), following a serious workplace injury sustained by the patient, 34-year-old Ibrahim Muhammad.
The patient's injury involved a complex open wound on the third phalanx of the finger, with near-total detachment of soft tissue and a crushed distal bone with free fragments. The medical team responded quickly, assessing the injury within two hours of the incident, and conducting emergency surgery to manage the wound and realign the bone to preserve the finger's anatomical structure and motor function.
After four days, the patient showed significant recovery, with improved movement and sensation in the injured finger. This positive outcome underscores the professionalism and readiness of the Vietnamese peacekeeping medical team, who conducted the surgery under challenging field conditions with limited equipment.
