Stay Safe This Halloween: Tips for a Spooktacular Holiday

Halloween is fast approaching, and while it's a time for fun and festivities, it's crucial to prioritise safety. Health officials remind us to stay home if unwell and get vaccinated to protect ourselves and others. Let's ensure a spooktacular but safe holiday for all.

Firstly, be mindful of the increased risk for children on Halloween. They are over twice as likely to be involved in a fatal car accident. To mitigate this, always walk on sidewalks or the far edge of the road facing traffic. Teach children to look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks or intersections.

When it comes to costumes, choose accessories that are short, soft, and flexible to avoid accidents. Ensure costumes fit well to prevent blocked vision and trips. Additionally, never wear decorative contact lenses without a prescription.

To keep allergies at bay, consider participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project®. This initiative, started by the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) organisation, provides non-food treats for children with allergies.

In light of the ongoing pandemic, stay up to date with vaccinations, including flu and COVID-19 shots. If you have symptoms, get tested immediately and skip any Halloween parties. Bring hand sanitiser while trick-or-treating or wash hands frequently if giving out candy. Always take precautions in crowded or indoor events.

Halloween safety involves several steps. Stay home if sick, walk safely, choose safe costumes, participate in allergy-friendly initiatives, stay vaccinated, and be cautious in crowds. By following these guidelines, we can ensure a fun and safe Halloween for everyone.
