Struggling with an Eating Disorder Continues for Franziska van Almsick

In a career spanning nearly two decades, Franziska van Almsick has left an indelible mark on the world of sports. Retiring at the tender age of 26, the German swimming legend has continued to remain a significant figure in the sports industry.

Van Almsick's journey began at an impressively young age, as she made her Olympic debut at just 14 years old. Her Olympic career was nothing short of remarkable, with ten medals to her name, including a silver medal in the 200m freestyle at the 1992 Olympics, her first Olympic medal.

However, off the pool, Van Almsick has faced her fair share of challenges. In 2000, the tabloid press mockingly dubbed her "Franzi van Speck" following a sporting failure, a nickname that has since been a reminder of the harsh scrutiny that comes with fame.

More significantly, Van Almsick has battled an eating disorder for over 20 years. She developed this condition due to feelings of a loss of control in her life. Today, she openly discusses her struggles with the disorder, using it as a warning sign that emerges when stress becomes too intense.

"I see it as a warning signal," Van Almsick said in recent interviews. "When I notice that I'm slipping, I know I need to take a step back and focus on myself."

The struggles with her eating disorder are ongoing, but Van Almsick tries to find something positive in her experiences. She is open about her journey, hoping to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges.

In a three-part documentary titled "Being Franziska van Almsick," viewers will get a closer look at the swimmer's life, both in and out of the pool. The documentary will air on the first channel on September 21 and will be available in the ARD Mediathek from September 4.

Despite the challenges she has faced, Van Almsick continues to inspire. She is recognized as one of the first female sports idols of the post-reunification era, and her resilience serves as a testament to her strength and determination.

Today, she resides in Heidelberg with her partner and their two sons, continuing to manage her eating disorder and finding balance in her life. Her story is one of courage, resilience, and a reminder that it's okay to ask for help when you need it.
