Test results on mineral water: Discovered presence of carcinogenic compound in two popular brands
In recent Oeko-Test evaluations, concerns have arisen over the quality of certain store brand mineral waters in Germany due to the detection of chromium contamination. However, the specific brands affected by this issue have not been explicitly stated in the test results, which primarily discuss chromium contamination in other contexts such as river water pollution and cosmetic clays.
While the test results offer some reassurance, it's important to note that not all mineral waters are free of harmful substances like chromium and PFAS. In fact, so-called "forever chemicals" such as trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were found in almost all tested products, albeit in trace amounts.
The test results revealed that Netto and Edeka's store brand water failed the test due to chromium contamination, leading to a downgrading of their grade. Specifically, the "Gut & Günstig Natürliches Mineralwasser Still" at Edeka and the "Naturalis Natürliches Mineralwasser Still" at Netto were affected by elevated chromium values.
On the positive side, one of the two test winners, the "Carolinen Naturelle" from Bielefeld, had no problematic ingredients and is sold in a glass bottle, making it a safer choice for consumers. Oeko-Test recommends paying close attention to the mineral water purchase or opting for the cheaper and strictly controlled alternative from the tap.
It's crucial to remember that while the levels of Chromium(VI) measured in this test are not acutely toxic, a risk cannot be ruled out with prolonged intake over many years. Chromium(VI) is classified as carcinogenic under the EU Chemicals Regulation (CLP).
In the interest of public safety, it is advisable for consumers to consult the most recent Oeko-Test publications or their official website for definitive information about specific store brands in Germany that have failed the test due to chromium contamination. Oeko-Test examined 53 still mineral waters from all over Germany, including well-known brands like Black Forest and Gerolsteiner, as well as many store brands from supermarkets and discounters.
In light of these findings, it's essential to approach the choice of mineral water with caution, especially during hot weather when the consumption of water increases. Not every still water promises cleanliness, and it's crucial to make informed decisions to ensure the safety of our drinking water.
Science highlights that not all mineral waters are safe, as they can contain harmful substances like chromium and PFAS. In health-and-wellness, choosing a brand that prioritizes nutrition and cleanliness is important to ensure the quality of the mineral water consumed.
