New Project Launched in Giessen: Medical Immediate Help After Sexual Assault

The City of Giessen has introduced a new project aimed at providing medical care and evidence preservation for victims of sexual violence. The project, titled 'Medical Immediate Help After Sexual Assault,' is part of an ongoing initiative by the Women's Emergency Call Frankfurt e.V., with Giessen being one of the 14 model cities in Hesse participating in this programme.

The project is coordinated by the Institute of Legal Medicine at the Justus Liebig University Giessen and involves the University Clinics of Giessen and Marburg and the Forensic Institute at the Institute of Legal Medicine. The Women's and Equal Opportunities Offices of the City of Giessen are leading the project.

The unique aspect of this project lies in its provision for anonymous evidence preservation. Victims of sexual violence can take some distance before filing a report, with the option for anonymous evidence preservation as part of their medical care. This ensures that victims have control over their own reporting process and can seek help without immediate pressure to report the incident to the police.

Medical care remains confidential for victims, with neither the hospital nor a counseling center able to file a report against the victim's wishes. The project aims to continue raising awareness that clothing, appearance, or behavior are not determining factors in sexual violence. The responsibility for sexual violence always lies with the perpetrator.

As part of the project, the intervention center against domestic violence of SKF e.V., Pro Familia Giessen e.V., Giessen Help e.V., and Wildwasser will provide psychological and social care for victims. The pharmacy at Ludwigsplatz will also continue to cooperate in providing medication as needed.

Further actions will be taken during the International Day against Violence program to raise awareness that sexual violence is never the victim's fault. The campaign to raise awareness about sexual violence is supported by the Hessian Ministry of Labor, Integration, Youth & Social Affairs.

Evidence will be stored for a year before being handed over to the police for use in investigations. The project will continue to operate with the University Clinics of Giessen and Marburg and the Forensic Institute at the Institute of Legal Medicine remaining involved.

The 'Medical Emergency Assistance after Sexual Abuse' project in Giessen aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for victims of sexual violence, empowering them to seek help and take control of their healing process.
