In the heart of Bnei Brak, a prominent figure, Haim Rotter, the head of the "Hashomrim" neighborhood watch organisation, finds himself at the centre of a serious investigation following allegations of sexual offenses against minors.

The investigation, being conducted by a special team at the Dan District Police, was initiated about three weeks ago following multiple complaints lodged against Rotter. After returning from abroad, where he had stayed for about three weeks following the emergence of allegations, he was detained at Ben Gurion Airport and brought in for interrogation by the Ramat Gan–Bnei Brak police.

The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court has extended Rotter's detention, first by a week and later by an additional six days, despite the police's request for a 15-day extension. Rotter did not attend the latest hearing in person, participating instead by video link. So far, thirteen formal complaints have been filed against him, with Rotter reportedly admitting to knowing some complainants but denying any criminal wrongdoing, claiming that any contact was consensual.

Concerns about Rotter's mental state and suicide risk have led to his being held under strict supervision. His wife was also questioned under caution and released to house arrest. Additionally, several other individuals from Bnei Brak linked to the investigation were arrested, some later released to house arrest.

The case has caused significant controversy within the ultra-Orthodox community, raising issues about communal silence and accountability. Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, a prominent figure in the community, has urged reporting Rotter to the police as a Torah commandment and obligation, stating that it is the religious community's duty to protect victims and prevent further harm to the children of Israel. He compared Rotter's actions to acts that the Torah compares to bloodshed.

The police's goal in the investigation is to uncover the truth. They have stated that investigators are gathering findings, evidence, and testimonies in the case. Notably, a complaint against Rotter was filed in the United States by an unnamed complainant, in cooperation with the FBI.

As the investigation continues, Rotter remains in custody under strict conditions, with the community and the nation watching closely for developments in this troubling case.
