Thousands Upon Thousands Experience Health Deterioration Due to Smoking - Thousands of Healths Impacted by Tobacco Use

The significant health risks posed by tobacco consumption have been highlighted by health insurance company AOK Plus, with their recent analysis revealing that thousands of individuals in Saxony are suffering from tobacco-related health impairments. AOK emphasized that smoking remains a prevalent and underestimated health hazard despite one in five adults continuing to smoke regularly. Alarmingly, young people are also increasingly turning to cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

In light of these concerning statistics, World No Tobacco Day (May 31) encourages smokers to consider quitting and embracing a smoke-free life. AOK supports this initiative, acknowledging the array of immediate health benefits associated with giving up smoking.

Two key advantages are the immediate improvement in physical fitness and a significant reduction in the risk of cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases. Within just 20 minutes after quitting, heart rate and blood pressure return to near-normal levels, while carbon monoxide levels in the blood begin to decrease. After 12 hours, the risk of heart attack begins to drop as the heart recovers from the constant strain of nicotine.

Within a few days, the ability to taste and smell improves as nerve endings regenerate, and breathing becomes easier as lung function starts to improve. After a week, circulation and lung function see significant increases, and coughing and wheezing diminish. Over the following months and years, the risk of heart attack, stroke, and various cancers decreases, with the risks becoming similar to those of a non-smoker after 15 years.

AOK Plus encourages those in Saxony who smoke to seek help from healthcare providers to understand the immediate health benefits of quitting and to participate in smoking cessation programs. With the myriad benefits of quitting, from improved lung function to reduced heart disease risk, this could be a critical step towards a healthier life for many in Saxony.

  1. Acknowledging the community policy agenda, AOK Plus emphasizes the need for a stringent employment policy that prohibits smoking during work hours to minimize the health risks posed by tobacco consumption.
  2. Given the prevalence of smokers in Saxony and the high incidence of tobacco-related medical-conditions such as chronic diseases, cancer, and respiratory conditions, it's crucial to implement a comprehensive health-and-wellness policy in workplaces that prioritizes health-focused initiatives.
  3. Mental health is equally important, and considering the high stress levels associated with tobacco use, an employment policy that offers stress management programs and resources could prove beneficial for smokers seeking to quit.
  4. In line with the emphasis on World No Tobacco Day, AOK Plus proposes a employment policy that incentivizes smoke-free lifestyles through benefits such as fitness programs, wellness days, and financial rewards for those who successfully quit smoking, promoting health-conscious behaviors among employees.
