In Saxony, thousands of individuals grapple with health complications due to tobacco consumption, as per a recent assessment by AOK Plus. The insurer flagged smoking as a persistently underestimated threat to public health, highlighting that one in five adults partakes in regular tobacco use. Concerningly, young people are also increasingly adopting smoking habits, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

On World No Tobacco Day (May 31), AOK urged inhabitants to commit to leading smoke-free lives. Quitting smoking yields immediate positive health consequences, AOK emphasized, with the risk of cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases substantially decreasing. Physical fitness improves, and life expectancy increases when an individual quits smoking.

Within minutes of cessation, blood pressure and pulse normalize, while lung function improves within a few weeks. Moreover, the risk of heart attack, stroke, or cancer drops significantly within months to years. After a fifteen-year smoke-free period, the risk of heart attack is equivalent to that of a non-smoker.

A range of health benefits ensue from quitting smoking, including reductions in the risk of developing several types of cancer, such as lung, throat, and mouth cancers. Smoking cessation also improves survival rates for cancer patients due to reduced chances of recurrence and enhanced overall health.

Furthermore, quitting smoking significantly lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke. Blood circulation improves, and the risk of peripheral artery disease diminishes. For those who smoke, quitting can slow down the decline in lung function and reduce the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath notably improve after quitting smoking.

These benefits align with extensive research in the field of public health and are typically emphasized by health organizations such as AOK Plus in Saxony.

The community policy in Saxony could include initiatives to address smoking, given the health concerns acknowledged by AOK Plus. A strong employment policy might also advocate for smoke-free workplaces to prioritize employee health and wellness, contributing to an overall culture of mental health support and fitness-and-exercise promotion. Beyond health benefits, the employment policy might consider offering support for therapies-and-treatments, including cessation programs, to help individuals quit smoking and access other health-related resources. Nutrition education can further complement such efforts to create a comprehensive and holistic approach to promoting health and wellness within the community.
