The lymphatic system, a crucial part of our immune response, is often overlooked. It consists of lymph vessels, lymph nodes, and organs like the tonsils and appendix. These can be removed if infected, but the body can still function without them. Meanwhile, early cancer treatment is vital, as cancer's seriousness is determined by whether it has spread to the lymph nodes.
The lymphatic system plays a vital role in fighting infections and maintaining fluid balance. It absorbs fats from the digestive tract and transports lymph, a fluid similar to blood plasma, containing disease-fighting white blood cells called lymphocytes. These include NK cells, T cells, and B cells, each with specific roles in defending against pathogens and tumors.
Lymph vessels connect to the circulatory system at capillaries, allowing lymph to enter the bloodstream. Swollen lymph nodes, such as those in the neck, can indicate a common cold or other infections. The lymph nodes are named after the body area they're found in, like the cervical nodes in the neck. Other important parts of the lymphatic system include the tonsils, appendix, and thymus, named after their respective locations in the throat, abdomen, and chest.
