Watermelon sale protest by Tomic

In an effort to ensure the safety of consumers, the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) has implemented stringent regulations regarding the sale of pre-cut watermelons in Russia.

According to these regulations, it is prohibited to sell sliced watermelons unless the slicing occurs in a special production facility. These facilities must adhere to hygienic conditions, package the product, label it with the date and time of production, expiration date, and storage conditions.

Only enterprises with such production facilities are allowed to sell pre-cut products. Sellers of watermelons and melons must also have medical records.

In the second quarter of 2025, Rospotrebnadzor inspected 16 facilities and took 142 samples of vegetables and fruits. However, the department does not specify what constitutes an "unauthorized point" in this context.

Residents are urged to be vigilant and report violations to the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor. Four Tomich residents filed complaints about the sale of pre-cut watermelons in the second quarter of 2025. Two samples were found to have excess nitrates, and these cases were reported to the producers for their reaction.

Purchasing vegetables and fruits from unauthorized points can lead to poisoning and infections. Such incidents were reported in various parts of the city, although no specific instances of poisoning or infections resulting from purchasing from unauthorized points were provided.

It is not recommended to store watermelons and melons directly on the ground. Sales of vegetables and fruits should occur in stores, departments, or seasonal markets.

It is not mentioned whether the department has any plans to increase inspections or enforcement actions in response to the ongoing violations. For the most accurate and up-to-date regulations, it would be necessary to consult official Rospotrebnadzor sources or regulatory documents directly from their website or contact the agency.

  1. The stringent regulations implemented by Rospotrebnadzor extend beyond watermelons, as they also regulate the sale of other food-and-drink items, ensuring the safety and health-and-wellness of consumers.
  2. In addition to the sale of pre-cut fruits and vegetables, Rospotrebnadzor may also oversee general-news pertaining to public health and lifestyle, offering guidance on best practices for food preparation and storage to promote a well-rounded health-and-wellness lifestyle.
  3. The Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) has shown interest in the general well-being of its citizens, as demonstrated by their efforts to implement regulations regarding various aspects of science and lifestyle, including health-and-wellness, food-and-drink, and general-news.
